Christofle are one of France's leading silversmiths, and have a rich and illustrious history. Founded by Charles Christofle, in Paris, in 1830, they are noted as being the first company to introduce electrolytic gilding and silver plating to France. They played an important part of furnishing the elite and royal French families starting with Napoleon III in 1851, and went on to also make important large sculptural pieces that decorated many famous French landmark buildings, such as the Place Opera (Palais Garnier). Still in business today, they continue to be a prolific manufacturer or home and decorative items.
The piece is in superb, unused condition, and is complete with its original green card box. The piece is signed Christofle, France and has the makers marks stamped into it. Made in France, circa 1990's.
